  1. Black Panther/T’challa

T’challa The King of the Dead!

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Created by: Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

1st appearance: Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966)

T’Challa the Black Panther is the super genius warrior king of the African nation of Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation on Earth. He is one of the smartest men in comic’s period. He’s a former Avenger, and Storm‘s ex-husband. Black Panther was the first mainstream black Marvel superhero and is currently the “King of the dead” and leading the New Avengers/Illuminati. I love his design and without his positive debut back when racism was more blatant writers would never have realized the need for black superheroes in the first place. The Black Panther truly kick started the revolution!

What did you think of our list?

and

Keep your eyes peeled for our next poll, the very ambitious

TOP 100 BLACK SUPERHEROES!

Until next time…….

35 thoughts on “Top 50 Black Superheroes-Fan Edition

  1. Falcon position on this ballot should be near the top. He is, after all, the very first African-American superhero in comics.

  2. I voted for the characters that are my personal favorites but before doing that I was not sure if I that was what the survey was intended to measure. Voting for the top 50 black characters could also be interpreted to mean who we as fans think the general population thinks are the top 50 or which 50 characters get the most juice from the creators in the industry.

  3. I would have liked to see more Black Super Heros from indy Black Publishers. I dont understand the point of awareness if ita only marvel and d.c all the time. Only characters created by a Black Person should be considered. We need to ignore everything about comics, until more Blacks are in control at Marvel and D.C

  4. I see no Independent Black comic book super heroes! I only see a bunch of Marvel and DC Comics which shows some serious lack of consciousness. This is a good list but it reproduces what Fanon would call “Black skin, White mask”

  5. I’d put Monica Rambeau considerably higher. Not only was she the first black character (at least that I’d seen) that wasn’t blaxploitation “street” or the stereotypical African/Caribbean stranger-in-a-strange land, it was refreshing to see the Avengers in the eyes of someone who hadn’t had any more exposure to superheroes than the average person on the street and had suddenly become one (which, for the Avengers, was another first).

  6. “I see no Independent Black comic book super heroes! I only see a bunch of Marvel and DC Comics which shows some serious lack of consciousness.”

Good point. Gossamer from Innovation’s old Hero Alliance series comes to mind very quickly–a single mother who decided not to use a secret identity and almost lost custody of her son because of it.

  7. You included some new heroes, so where’s Val-Zod, the new Earth 2 Superman or Tanya Spears the new DC Power Girl? Also, where’s Thunder & Lightning the daughters of Black Lightning? What about Jakeem Thunder? The new Earth 2 Dr Fate & Hawk girl? Invisible Kid II from the Legion of Super Heroes, XS from t he Legion, Tyroc from the Legion?

  8. Ummm….Black Panther pre-dates the Falcon by 3 years, but you DID say African-AMERICAN so I guess that you’re right.

  9. This is cool. I will read up on some of these heroes that I’m not familiar with. keep up the great work
.New to the site but loving what i seeing .

  10. There’s a common theme among a lot of these HEROS, orphaned, single parent, family tragedy,ex thief, ex con, born in the ghetto etc, etc… This is what I mean when I speak about no black writers writing for black characters. Ya’ll count em out for yourself then let me know is it negative stereotyping or is it me?!?…P.S. And that’s just out of fifty! WAKE UP!!

  11. Great job listing YOUR “Top 50”. Of course your efforts will be criticized, because fan-boys/fan-girls are opinionated and passionate. 🙂

    Keep up the good work!

  12. Ant?
    Black Racer?
    Val-Zod?

Some serious oversights. Cool list though. 😉

  13. Awesome list. I would take out the likes of Sunspot in exchange put Bronze Tiger, Battalion, Captain Marvel/Pulsar, members of TRIBE, members of the Blood Syndicate, Sentinel, Bulletproof, and Shadowhawk.
