Avengers Vs X-men #8 Review

Last stand in Wakanda as an out-of-control Namor invades this sovereign nation in pursuit of the Avengers!

And a shocking truth stands revealed that may cause fractures in the X-Men’s alliance!

Summary

Namor of Atlantis attacks Wakanda and engages the Black Panther and Avengers. It takes everything they have to defeat him. When the rest of the Phoenix 5 arrives the Phoenix departs Namor and diffuses its power between the remaining four. The Avengers escape to Kin Lun to train Hope. Professor X finally steps in and warns Scott from continuing his choice of action or he will be forced to intervene.

The Good

Wakanda destruction- It sucks to live in this country especially in the capital where the royal family is located. Seriously Marvel Doomwar now this!? Shuri as newly minted queen (See Fantastic Four #608) needs to return Wakanda to isolation for the safety and security of her people. Every tragedy has been caused by T’challa’s involvement with the outside world. These stories if we are following logic would dictate wakanda’s return to its original stance on outsiders. Let’s check the facts; under isolation no one entered of defeated them, they were THE premier superpower in the world, with outsiders they have had their walls breached numerous times, doom conquered and plundered them and no T’challa harbored the avengers which led to massive loss of life in the capital.

Cover- Two covers are sexy as ****! One has the Phoenix 5 front and center with Cyclops holding both Thor’s Hammer and Cap’s shied, that’s hot! The other, standard cover has the inflamed Namor literally destroying the avengers, it rocks!

Black Panther- Complain all you want but I am just so god damned happy T’challa is included in a meaningful capacity in this series after the travesty of “Fear Itself”.

Action- Arguably the best fight of the series so far. Namor is a beast and add the Phoenix to the mix and what we have is a red hulk arm breaking kick even Thor and the entire Avengers ass bad ass that really ups the stakes in this “war”, $hit just got real!

Art- Adam Kubert is on art duties and what a breath of fresh air he is! As usual for Kubert emotions are center stage on the faces of just about everyone you would expect.

The Bad

Other covers- Why would Beast Vs Luke Cage be relevant to this story only god could explain it to me!

New artist- As I noted when Oliver Coipel took over this series will be a hot mess in TPB form with no consistency in the art department. Then again if you’re getting AVX in TPB form you should already know what you’re getting yourself into.

Wakanda hate- Ok I’m probably more liberal minded than most of my fans and I’m not saying there is an agenda to destroy Wakanda even though that could be inferred from the Doomwar miniseries and now this. I expect purists to scream “racism” or the typical “marvel hates black people and/or characters” this story is not going to convince them otherwise.

The Ugly

Pretty art and great action make this a decent book and arguably the best fight of AVX yet! 3/5

  1. No,No,Marvel doesn’t hate it’s Black characters. It just sabotages them if it looks like they are getting “too” popular. After Hudlin’s amazing run,Marvel has gone out of it’s way to put Panther back in his “place”.
