Squadron Supreme (2015) #1 Review

SquadronSupreme#1 1

They’re each the sole survivor of a lost Earth and they’ll do anything to protect this one, whether you like it or not. The Squadron Supreme — comprising Hyperion (Avengers), Nighthawk (Supreme Power), Dr. Spectrum (the Great Society), Blur (DP7) and Power Princess — are a team that doesn’t ask permission or what the rules are. To them all that matters is the safety of Earth and if you stand in the way…that’s your problem! Tell that to the Squadron’s first target — Namor, destroyer of Dr. Spectrum’s homeworld, who will have to pay for his crimes…but at what cost to the people of Atlantis.

The Good

Cover-Hyperion, Dr. Spectrum, Princess Zarda, Blur, Nighthawk and Thundra are like Greek gods bathed in white light rendered by Alex Ross. They look badass and totally Epic.

Team– I have always been more anti-hero minded than plain heroic. This team appeals to me on so many levels. I sided with Namor when he broke away from the Illuminati because they thought it wasn’t worth losing their souls and saving the world. These guys are kicking ass and chopping off heads. I can dig it! SquadronSupreme#1 4

Black HeroNighthawk is the star of the book hands down. He has assembled this team and gave them a singular vision and direction. As I watch him in motion I can’t help but get excited at the prospect of him and Black Panther facing off either tactically or in a one on one fight. Blur meanwhile is confirmed as the “New Universe” version which has not been seen in ages. Good times ahead!

Action- This was a very action packed first outing with Namor and Hyperion trading blows, Hyperion literally destroying Atlantis and Princess Zarda chopping off Attuma’s head. This is the stuff old school comics are made of and I love it!

Accessibility- I love how new readers can get an idea of who each member of the story is in this opening issue

Consequences– I could not help but chuckle as Namor and his people by extension were punished for his crimes. While I agreed with his creation of the Dark Cabal Namor has done so much to Black Panther and Wakanda that I can’t help but have a wicked grin as he’s decapitated. This is the same man who betrayed T’challa to Dr. Doom which set in motion the events that had Shuri become Black Panther, T’challa almost die, the Doomwar debacle and the less said about his destruction of the Wakandan capitol and the death of many Wakandan citizens during the Avengers Vs X-men storyline, that lead to the annulment of Storm and T’challa’s marriage. Namor then engaged in a protracted war with Wakanda which he lost and in cruel revenge had Thanos’s army attack and pillage the great Wakanda. Roast in hell Namor you deserve much worse!

The Bad

Comic book death– Namor is dead….how long that lasts is anyone’s guess.

Art-Leonard Kirk is the artist for this issue and it’s adequate though not the most consistent from panel to panel.

Accessibility- The one nitpick was that there was no description of the heroes sill sets, you had to guess as opposed to being told outright.

The Ugly

Squadron Supreme makes a strong opening statement about what it’s about and where it fits into the tapestry of the New Marvel status-quo. It was exciting from start to finish and that is not something I can say about every newly launched Marvel title! We give this one 4/5 stars

stars- 4 very good
