A Black Panther Movie Is 'Absolutely In Development'

So this week in the rumor mill: the always in development but never hitting the big screen news is that Marvel’s Black Panther is absolutely in development and it comes from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige while making the rounds for promoting Thor the Dark World.

What did he say that has people all excited (except me)?

“In terms of Black Panther, it’s absolutely in development… When you have something as rich as Wakanda and his backstory – and clearly Vibranium’s been introduced in the universe already – I don’t know when it will be exactly, but we certainly have plans to bring him to life some day.”

Take that with a pound of salt honestly since Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, said this about a potential Black Panther movie:

“He has a lot of the same characteristics of a Captain America: great character, good values… But it’s a little more difficult, maybe, creating [a world like Wakanda]. It’s always easier basing it here. For instance, ‘Iron Man 3’ is rooted right here in Los Angeles and New York. When you bring in other worlds, you’re always faced with those difficulties.”

The most annoying thing about being a black panther fan is the constant news and rumor surrounding a potential movie. Wesley snipes since the late 90’s was interested in playing said character. In March 22nd 2011 Michael Jai White mentioned:

“I would do something with Black Panther that would make you forget about Batman. I guarantee you, if I got a chance to do Black Panther, everything would change. The genre would change.”

Read the whole thing here.

In august 2011 Brazilian dead ringer to Black Panther nemesis Erik Killmonger made our hearts go aflutter with rumors that he had been cast as the Villain in the black panther movie (Read that here). In September 2012 Romeo Miller was approached to play the Black Panther (read about it here). In that same month came rumors that Aldis Hodge was a front runner in being cast as the African king (read about it here). Finally in 2013 Morris Chestnut again excited us with rumors he was to play the king (Click here for details).

Now having deflated our bubbles I must say there is a glimmer of hope stretching back to 2011 when it was announced that the Black Panther movie was back in development we reported that:

According to the hollywood reporter Since reacquiring the rights to the franchise Marvel has been hard at work with Mark Bailey who will write the script and Kevin Feige who shall produce the project.

Hmmmmm……

Is Kevin confirming that he will produce the Black Panther movie for the script that Mark Baily has been working on since January 2011?? What do you guys think?

Sound off below!

More as it breaks!

  1. See, that’s the thing. I don’t care how many awards or credentials that Mark Bailey has if he’s not black how can he write from the perspective of a african and all that a black hero would think?.he can’t. So I would gather that its not going to be able to hold a candle to Hudlins amazing cartoon version..unless he copies that exact story? No offense but we’re about to accept a white guys thinking for our strongest black hero…and he’s an african king!?!Thats not right and don’t tell me I’m not being fair or that I’m prejudice cause to me that’s like Alex Hailey writing the next Captain America movie in Africa they would NEVER let that shit fly! And as far as the Creation of Wakanda goes, that’s just a bunch of b.s. cause the last time I checked we have plenty of State parks and scenic areas in the U.S. and look at movies like Lord of the rings or blue screen movies like 300 or Thors homeworld Asgard which was in another dimension and they made it look beautiful!

  2. I’m going to make a prediction, IF they make this movie, which will be written, directed and produced by white guys, it will have a white guy or guys help him save the day or one that he will answer to. And don’t forget the skinny blond that he’ll have to save or fall in love with. The last thing they want black people to have is a strong black masculine image to look up to. I’ll be dammed if they start now, especially with a black hero called Black Panther! Nah, they’re gonna stay with the Falcon…he’s safe.

  3. C’mon, get a grip already. You DO realize that you’re talking about a fictional character who was created by a white man in the first place, right? Frankly, I’d have no problem with Alex Haley writing a Captain America movie. So long as the story is good and they cast it right, who cares WHAT ethnicity the writer is? {{shrugs}}

  4. Yea, I fully realize that I’m talking about a fictional character created by a white guy. But unlike you I understand the effects of propaganda and the system of white supremacy. And if you do some historical reseach on either subject you would see that it’s not o.k. Remember art imitates life ,kids as well as adults read and watch these characters in action and all it takes is subtle exchanges between the characters or decisions that a particular character makes to effect a lot of us on how we should react or what is said and how we handle similar things in our day to day lives gradually making it the norm. Even in cartoons I’d see subordinates talking down to their superior who just so happens to be black or the black hero standing down or differing to his white counterpart. Propaganda is real and relative so ask yourself how many masculine black actors do you see on television as leading men then ask how many of our black sisters are cast to be the love interest to white men? Nah sister, you get a grip.

  5. I don’t think this movie gets made. The Black Panther does not have a strong enough following even to support a healthy comic book series. BP would have to be part of the Avengers or an Iron Man story to happen. He’d be a great addition to the Avengers because he could work with Tony Stark.

The Panther also has no great power that would allow him to save the world. He’s more on Spiderman’s level and Spiderman’s movie adventures are all local. I love the Panther but I don’t see his mass appeal in a stand-alone movie adventure.
