Generation-X #62 Review

Summary

Tabitha, Monet’s friend who was killed by a vampire rises from her grave. The next morning Monet alerts the police she knows where the killer is. She leads them to the headmaster’s office where she pulls back the curtains to reveal him as a vampire. He doesn’t however and tells the police she has been acting up ever since her classmate’s death. Once they leave she warns him that she still knows his secret and she will put a stop to him. They exchange words and she leaves his office not sure what to make of him since he doesn’t have the sunlight weakness of your typical garden variety Vampire.

Without the resources of the Xavier Institute she uses the internet as her source of information to kill vampires. At Night she is attacked by Tabitha who she easily stakes. In the headmaster’s office he tries to snack on another of Monet’s friends. Monet clad in her Gen-X costume confronts him again and he flees. She takes her friend to safety and the headmaster’s secretary attacks her as another vampire. She quickly turns her to dust.

He tries eating another student and Monet tracks him via  telepathy, a fight ensues and she kills him. Putting an end to his decades of terror the school is shut down and she saves the day. She returns to the Xavier institute knowing this is her place in the world.

The Good

Monet returns to Gen-X after defending the weak and innocent girls of her boarding school. She uses her strength, reflexes and telepathy to easily take down all the vamps in record time, Buffy would be proud :)

The Bad

Terrible very obviously rushed art work. The pages are simply cringe worthy. To make matters even worse the pages seems to change artist every few pages…none better than the other…just ghastly!

The Ugly

Mutant X Annual 2000 Review

Summary

Bloodstorm and Gambit are breaking into a facility of Apocalypse for Gambit’s mysterious client. Bloodstorm has kept hidden from Gambit the fact that she’s a vampire. When they break in they meet the Fallen (Angel/Archangel/Warren Worthington III) he tricks them into thinking he’s injured and he forces storm to transform to mist revealing to her friend that she’s a vampire. Him and the horsemen attack and our duo flee. Bloodstorm calls forth rats, wolves and bats to hold off their attackers while they search for the ‘prize” they seek. Ororo recounts how she became a vampire as he opens the main lock. They retrieve two babies and the horsemen attack again. Gambit is mortally wounded and begs Bloodstorm to ‘turn’ him. She does and they make their escape. They re-goup in a graveyard where the thirst calls Remy to kill the children. He lashes out at storm for turning him and runs off. He meets up with members of the assassin’s guild and feeds on her. Sated he returns to the graveyard before dawn. He takes the children inside a tomb and sleeps till night, Bloodstorm leaves for parts unknown.   That night sinister comes for the children he decides to take the boy and kill the girl but Gambit stops him by using his new powers. Sinister allows him to keep the girl though he may reclaim her later. In his lab he force grows the boy to puberty.

The Good

Art was very colorful and vibrant contrasting with the macabre vampire tale that it told. Cover- This cover shows a devastatingly beautiful Bloodstorm with Gambit. This is easily my favorite rendition of Bloodstorm.

Story- This story fills in the gaps of how Gambit became a vampire in the main Mutant X series and also explains his relationship to Bloodstorm. The children introduced in this tale also play a major role in issues following in the mutant x universe.

The Bad

It was rather lackluster for this alternate universe which started out so well to just suddenly become so similar to 616 continuity (mainstream marvel) Gambit working for sinister, growing Nate Grey etc It was all contrived and boring.

The Ugly 2.5 average read

Generation-X #61 Review

Generation X #61 - Christmas Fear: Part Two

Background

Monet St. Croix has been taken from the Massachusetts academy where she was a member of Emma Frost’s school for the gifted along with classmates Jubilee, Skin, Synch and Husk. Her father thought the school was too dangerous for his favorite child so she was sent to a private boarding school in the Swiss Alps. She is about to find out that danger is never far behind when you’re a mutant……

Summary

At Monet’s new School Tabby who Monet found attacked last issue is wheeled out on a stretcher. She has died unnaturally with two distinct puncture marks on her neck. Monet tries to keep her roommate calm when Mr. Delacourte the school’s headmaster tries to console them in this time of grief by having them go to bed and come to his office in the morning so he can speak with them in private.

In the morning Monet meets with him as he consoles her in this moment of trauma. His eyes go yellow as he tries to hypnotize her. Luckily her telepathy naturally leaves her unaffected. Before she knows what’s happening he pounces on her and sinks his fangs into her neck. Using her strength she easily tosses him aside, unprepared for her powers he flees. Monet then realizes that the whole school is a sham, Delacourte ha the girls at his mercy.

Generation –X face off with Juggernaut and Black Tom for the sake of Cordelia Frost. They win.

The Good

Classic Monet :) gotta love her!

This issue had Monet tackling an enemy she doesn’t have experience fighting or much knowledge of, which considering her power set is always a welcome change. It also finds her isolated and alone, something despite what she claims she’s not a fan off  this is supported  when her first reaction to being attacked is to call her friends :P

This issue also leads up to her rejoining the Gen-X team after months of talking down to them and pretending as if they didn’t matter. Monet is a lone hero with a school of girls to protect :) what fun!!

The Bad

The issue was very uneven in the art department. Kevin sharp has a style here reminiscent of Terry Dodson but lacking his smoothness. As a result the parts that look ‘Dodson like” seem forced and lackluster. Conversely the pages he spent time and effort on such as the opening battle between Gen-x and Juggy are nice.

This issue didn’t have Monet seeing much action :(

The Ugly

2/5 slightly below average

Blade? 4?!

We all remember the 1st and 2nd Blade films fondly :) and the bad after taste of poop which was the 3rd :P well apparently Mr. Snipes himself would like another crack at being a bad ass day walking vampire. Lord knows I would be willing to part with a few dollars to have a “proper” vampire movie instead of all this Twilight diamond glow Bull$h!t going around. I still think he’s perfect for the role despite everything that’s happened in his life recently.
Acting is my main lane, and I’m planning to expand that, taking the success of films like ‘Blade’ and marinating that into something that flourishes,” he said. “Maybe we get around to doing another ‘Blade,’ except, from what I’m reading, every other actor is talking about playing him, and nobody is talking to Wesley. How strange that they don’t come and talk to me about it.
In the age of reboots (upcoming) spiderman, X-men first class etc would you watch another Blade movie if Wesley wasn’t at the helm?

Spawn #1 Review

Spawn #1 - Questions Pt.

Summary

Spawn has returned from hell with only partial memory of his former life as a man and his deal with the devil to be brought back to life. He saves a woman from being raped. News feeds continue to talk about his death and a rash of new murders in the area. Local cops are on the lookout for this “sicko”. Spawn starts remembering bits of his past and comes to the realization he’s not quite human anymore.

In hell a demon/devil laughs noting his life is about to get so much worse.

The Good

The cover is gorgeous! And those posters inside! Beautiful!

This poster needs to be immortalized on a 90's wall :)

First issue collectors item than can fetch a hefty price if you find a fan with a fat pocket. :)

Back in may 1992 a new Black superhero was born! This series continues to today! That’s a feat worth mentioning. ;) Especially for a black lead book.

The letter page! I don’t know why I read the letter page for this issue since week after week I read so many issues I often don’t have the time BUT the letter page was the best part of the whole damn comic! sounds crazy right? Let me explain since this is the first issue there is no fan mail yet so Todd took it upon himself to address his departure from spider-man and the lucrative job at marvel. It’s a great red about the comic book industry from an insider who frankly was plain fed up with the “system”. I can recommend this issue based on that one page alone because it blows the other pages…the stuff with spawn….out of the water.

The interiors lack polish

The Bad

The interior art didn’t have the beauty of the posters of the cover :(

Story was generic, and humorless.

Spawn is a rehash of designs Todd used on a character called over in spider-man which got killed off with a new color scheme. Sure it’s a nice design but seriously? Did we run out of creative juice?

The Ugly

2/5 slightly below average.
