Justice League of America (2013) #1 Review

Justice League of America 2013 #1 (1)

The march toward TRINITY WAR begins with part one of “WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS”!

Green Lantern! Green Arrow! Catwoman! Katana! Vibe! Hawkman! Stargirl! They aren’t the world’s greatest super heroes—they’re the most dangerous! But why does a team like the JLA need to exist? What is their ultimate mission? And who is pulling the strings?

Plus: Find out why Martian Manhunter is the most dangerous of them all. Period.

The Good

Art- David Finch’s use of light and dark are put to good use in this issue and fits the overall tone very well.

Black Heroes- Amanda Waller and Green Lantern Simon Baz are here although Amanda is clearly our star, pulling strings and giving plenty of orders.

Pacing- This issue lowed like poetry honestly, everything was meticulously done. The members and the reason for their selection was explained well, while the shadowy villains and the threat level also managed to also shoe horn Green Arrow onto the team. Geoff Johns worked pure magic on this one; I’m impressed all over again.

Team- I honestly can’t wait to see how Amanda Waller packages this grouping to the public. Katana is an assassin, Baz was suspected of terrorism and escaped from custody, Hawkman is either crazy or psychotic, Catwoman is a criminal…Amanda honey, baby girl, this is crazy with a capital C R A Z. The team does have the appeal of a train wreck though, I can’t look away!

Cover- Very simple and very effective with the team raising a flag (a tribute to Iwa ima I’m told).

Accessibility- I must admit I rolled my eyes when I heard that Katana and Vibe were to get ongoing every month while characters like Vixen, Black Lightning and the whole Milestone comics cast would be far more deserving but this issue gave me enough of an appetizer that I will be reading both + even Catwoman based on this issue. Talk about marketing a team!

The Bad

Art- Just nitpicks really;  Finch occasionally draws chests too large for bodies and he briefly lapses on a panel or two with trevor and later has a torso way too long on stargirl. As I said just nitpicking.

The Ugly

Overall this was a very enjoyable read with a much darker tone than the Justice League title already offered by Geoff Johns and DC Comics the only thing missing from this issue was an emotional center of some kind to make it perfect. 4.5/5

stars- 4.5
