Justice League #6 Review

Summary

Cyborg and the Justice League are in all out attack mode on the villainous Darkseid. On Apokalips de-masked batman locates Superman who’s being tortured by Dessad. On earth Cyborg connects with the mother boxes of Apokalips to bring Superman and Batman from the alien world and send Darkseid back home, he vows to return!

Having saved the day our heroes get thunderous applause and cheers. That is how the new Justice League came together!

The Good

Cyborg- Ladies and gentlemen Cyborg is officially the coolest member of this rag tag team. Who saved the day? Cyborg! Who is the only person to have any type of development over these first six issues? Cyborg! Mysterious undefined powers and arguably cooler than he was before the DC reboot? My man Cyborg! I like it!

Covers- The standard cover features the Justice League kneeling in front of the mighty Darkseid while Superman is skewered on some red crystals; the color red radiates everywhere, gorgeous! The other cover is a sketch with detailed pencils and pens, lovely! Another cover is a close up of Darkseid’s eyes as the fire from his eyes blowing in the wind, simply stunning! All around every cover is worthy of praise thanks to Jim Lee’s awesome work.

Action-The entire issue was one big fight the new Justice league is one deadly bunch! Wonder woman and Aquaman in particular went straight for Darkseid’s eyes….brutal!

Art- Jim Lee you old dog your art takes me way back to the 90′s when your work was all the rage….and home boy still has it! Everything was lovely!

Splash pages- Two expertly placed splash pages add excitement to this action packed

New development- In the past Darkseid had many sons, three by my memory in the new DCU he has a daughter and she’s the reason he invaded earth…he’s searching for his lil girl…..interesting.

The Bad

?- still no reason why batman de-masked in the middle of a battle……..not sure there every will be an explanation for that one apparently DC was just going for “shock value” (shrug)

The Ugly

Action heavy with great art! 3/5

Justice League #4 Review

Summary

Victor Stone’s body recalibrates with the cybernetic parts that have now been grafted onto him. He interfaces with the computer systems around him and defeats the attacking monsters before fleeing from his father upon learning he was the one who did this to him.

Elsewhere Aquaman and the rest of the heroes bicker about who should lead.

Cyborg continues to cut a path through Darkseid’s forces and apparently assimilates a “mother box” which reveals that the forces of apokalips plan to destroy earth through the absorption of all organic life. He teleports to the others as Darseid attacks!

The Good

Covers- All four covers are gorgeous so much infact I parted with much $$ to get each. Jim Lee you wound me with these works of art!

Cyborg- Every other member of this team has a solo book so it’s understandable that Victor is our eyes and ears in this new start to the justice league. Also good is the humanity invested into Victor. Outwardly he is arguably the most inhumane of the lot but he’s the most thoroughly developed individual of this team in these pages (on a side note I’m not reading any of the other characters solo books).

The new Justice League- Finally all the players are in place, the stakes are known the enemy is revealed, action is bound for next issue!  It was also amusing to see the different personalities play off each other even if Green Lantern was annoying as hell!

Aquaman- Not since Grant Morisson had one handed long bearded Aquaman, has he been portrayed as nearly this cool! It was so cool I may even consider picking up his solo book next month.

Darkseid- Ever since Grant Morisson’s JLA and the superman animated series I’ve been a huge Darkseid fan and his moderate redesign looks great! He is the perfect Villain for earths gathered heroes, can’t wait to see him in action next issue!

Humor- The assembled heroes were hilarious to watch bicker like children about who should lead. Nice touch since things could have easily been so sombre and dull.

Art- Jim Lee is the only artist I really liked back in the 90’s who still turns out some good art. Pacheco has been dull on Uncanny X-men and don’t get me started on Bachalo on Wolverine and the x-men (yuck) Kudos to lee on maintaining his high standard!

The Bad

Reynoldsification- Just when I started to stomach Hal Jordan DC decides Ryan Reynolds did such a great job of Hal that they have started incorporating his wisecracking and trademark “Kyle Rayner” brand humour into the once dull Hal. It doesn’t work for me, I HATE IT! XD

The Ugly

It looks good, reads good and is $$ well spent 4/5

Justice League #3 Review

Summary

In Washington DC Wonder Woman is on the lookout for a battle while her handlers try to track her down. While she eats Ice cream with a little girl a boom tube opens up and she springs into action. In star labs Victor Stone’s father decides to use an experimental technology to save his son. Meanwhile Flash, Batman, Superman and Green Lantern battle the forces of Darkseid. Wonder woman joins the fray as Victor Stone is transformed into Cyborg. Immediately Cyborg senses Darkseid whose castle has appeared on earth and Darkseid senses him as well. Our heroes gather at the base of the monument and Aquaman joins the fray.

The Good

Cover- The two covers by Jim Lee are gorgeous.

Art- Jim Lee still turns in some of the best art in the business, simply gorgeous!

Story- The first threat and formation of the Justice League is complete with all the members making an appearance.

Action- This issue ramps up the action big time with the fight carrying the whole comic from start to finish. I like the dialogue and the new spin on these classic characters.

The Bad

Cover- The Alternate cover is hideous!

The Ugly

3.5/5

Justice League #2 Review

Summary

In central city Flash is stuck investigating himself while Batman and Green Lantern can’t seem to calm Superman. Lantern contact Flash for help and he manages to hold off Superman long enough for batman to talk to him. The feds soon show up and the group flees. At Star Labs Cyborg’s father examines one of the Mother Box’s left behind. Cyborg and his dad have an awkward and tension filled moment right before the mother Box activates and Apokalips troops attack both the lab and the Justice League in two different locations. Cyborg is altered by the experience.

The Good

Origin- I must admit this new origin for Cyborg has me very interested and anticipating his technology coming out of this. Before he was an advanced cybernetic being largely earth based. Here he appears to have ties to Darkseid’s Apokalips technology. Huge upgrade! Can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Splash pages- This issue made great use of Splash pages to highlight the action.

Family-Cyborg is easily the most human of all the Justice League thus far and understandably so since he’s the only team member without his own ongoing series. Cyborg is an athlete, his dad a scientist, they don’t see eye to eye on anything. Neither considers what the other does important, they have differing world views…..it’s an all too familiar tale which I can relate to since my dad was more sports oriented while I was an indoors type (laugh). This is a great set up for both Victor and his father’s characters to grow from here, granted Vic’s dad doesn’t die.

Characterization- Batman the detective brain, Flash ad Green Lantern the old friends and Superman the wild card. This issue really does a great job of highlighting all the various personalities, something missing from team books like recent X-men r even justice League international. Here everyone is important to the tale, its nice having a small cast where personalities are at the center of the tale.

Action- More fights more explosions and more excitement. This issue racks up just about everything from the first issue to great effect!

Cover Art- Superman pummelling Batman while Green Lantern tries to separate the two not only fits the story contained with but also showcases the artistic strength of the aged like fine wine Jim Lee.

Interior Art- Still gorgeous

The Bad

Hero vs Hero stories are cliché at this point even if we do like to read them.

The Ugly

4.5/5

Justice League #1 Review

Summary

Five years ago Batman is being tracked by armed feds while he tracks an unknown assailant. Green Lantern/Hal Jordan shows up to assist him and they meet for the first time. Together they track down the assailant who self destructs leaving them with a mother Box. They head to metropolis!

Meanwhile Victor Stone wins another match for his team and the scouting agents go wild to sign him. His dad has again missed the game and doesn’t even show up much to his dismay.  Overhead Batman and Green Lantern fly to metropolis. They arrive and get attacked by Superman.

The Good

Cover- Gorgeous! Jim Lee’s style is perfectly suited to the larger than life characters of the Justice League and don’t get me started on how cool Cyborg looks!

Sombre tone-DC has taken a page out of marvel’s post civil war line up and re-created the dc universe as abhorrent to superheroes and vigilantes. It works wonders in injecting freshness in to the otherwise “stale” DC comics of couple months ago. Sure I miss old continuity and sure most of my dc collection is rendered useless and irrelevant but the new status quo fills me with a sense of excitement I HAVENT FELT IN YEARS!

Cyborg- Victor Stone is the everyman on this team of established Superheroes. Here we see Victor as an all American football star with the whole world ahead of him. No doubt we are being set up for tragedy on an epic scale in his new origin tale. Also noteworthy is just how unhappy Victor is. In the age old tradition of Superhero’s he also has a neglectful dad which results in “daddy issues”, can’t complain when things have me anticipating next issue already.

Interior art- Jim Lee’s style has improved somewhat in recent years. For years after drawing X-men #1 his characters had similar poses, bodies and costumes but here Lee flexes his art muscles by having a very distinct look and feel to each of his characters. I particularly like his rendering of the batman and superman costumes.

Action- Every good comic needs good fight scene and this first issue managed to give us a taste of Superman vs Batman and Green Lantern, while also get a explosive opening with a dazzling chase scene.

Dynamic- Batman and Green Lantern instantly have a great dynamic since they have different approaches to heroics. Literally night and day and with a newer younger more aggressive Superman, good times ahead!

The Bad

Ryan Reynolds- Someone please tell DC to stop incorporating Ryan Reynolds personality into Hal Jordan, it’s like the taste of bad aftershave in the mouth. Sure Hal has always been a flat personality but was he in need of a “reynoldsification”? Kyle already has the corner market on being the Joker of the Lantern squad this is just bad taste!

Pacing- The issue felt stretched, not allot happened in this issue when compared to Justice League International which literally hit the ground running :(

The Ugly

4/5
