There have been multiple castings recently announced and they all leave me begging for more.
Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Alfre Woodward will star alongside Mike Colter in Marvel’s “Luke Cage” as Minetta, who will be a lead character in the series.
According to Deadline, Woodward’s character Minetta is “a powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life.” Though no further details have been provided about the role, the announcement speculates that Woodward’s character will be Black Mariah. A frequent antagonist for both Cage and Iron Fist in the comics, Black Mariah is described as both a professional criminal and a drug dealer.
We will also witness the silver screen debut of another of Luke’s classic nemesis, Cornel Cottonouth!
Marvel.com has announced that “House of Cards” actor Mahershala Ali has joined the rapidly expanding cast of Netflix’s “Luke Cage” series. Ali will portray Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, described in the announcement as “a Harlem nightclub owner” who will “become an unexpected foe in Luke’s life when Stokes’ criminal activities threaten Luke’s world.”
Cottonmouth for those who don’t know was the individual from which the heroin which landed Luke Cage in jail was stolen from by Willis Stryker (who has yet to be cast). Cornel later made his modern day debut during the Shadowland arc starring the New Powerman.
Lastly there was the casting of Theo Rossi as Shades:
Deadline’s report states that Rossi’s character is “smooth and manipulative, street smart and controlling.” Deadline’s inside source believes that Rossi will be playing a villain on the show, Shades. In the comics, Shades and his partner Comanche were Cage’s fellow inmates; upon getting out of jail, Shades donned a special visor that emitted powerful blasts.
We are very excited at these casting announcements and grow more and more excited about Netflix’s Luke Cage with each passing day. This is shaping up to be exactly what the doctor ordered until 2018’s Black Panther solo film. These fantastic actors will join Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Simone Missic as Misty Knight and Rosario Dawson as Clair Temple.
