Meet Alexandra Shipp…the X-men's new Storm!

Alexandra Storm

Sometime yesterday news hit the web that X-men: Apocalypse was adding three new young actors to the core lineup and one of those was the stunning Alexandra Shipp set to play the mutant weather witch Storm. Shipp is best known for playing Aaliyah in the 2014 biopic. She replaces Halle Berry who’s flat portrayal of Storm failed to resonate with fans. Will Shipp add new life to the character or will she simply continue the established monotone trend? Only time will tell as 2016’s X-men Apocalypse nears.

Are you excited by this news?

Sound off below!

  1. Will I was one of those who was flat out against Halle Berry playing Storm, this girl right here already I can tell is too light. Storm is a dark skinned sister. I vehemently oppose this selection…come on, stop whitening one of the most iconic black figures in comics!

  2. Since you are World of Black Heros you should write the Director a letter protesting this pick. They couldn’t find a dark skinned black actress?

  3. Not liking what I am seeing
This is the best they could do?
The young lady is simply too light and too white
And we have no guarantee the character will be written any better
    Hope I am wrong
    But I don’t think I am

  4. Damn, fellas. Give the girl a chance. You’re just going to judge her on her skin color? Hmmmmm……SMH

  5. She flatly sucks as an actress.

    Drumline 2….weak.

Do I HAVE to go there about the Aaliyah movie?

Her skin color…I mean, it’s blatantly obvious they’re going to continue with the whitewashing and diminishing of her character. It’s a Fox movie…I’m not surprised about this.

But, just as an actress…….she’s terrible. Absolutely terrible actress.

  6. Once again it’s on! The white washing of black characters. A new storm, yeah right. Snow storm to be exact. I thought casting Halle Berry as Storm was terrible, now here comes Alexandra Ship ???!! My choice was always N’Bushe Wright, but at 44 years of age that’s out of the question now. So how about the baddest sister in Hollywood; Nicole Beharie !!

  7. Interestingly enough fox’s TV lineup has a descent representation of Black actors which begs the question: do they think no one is watching TV so they put them there but don’t want Blacks seen in big budget world wide movies? For me it’s not as much a skin color item as a stature item. We have a Black African that just won an academy award for being a slave in a movie, it would have been a massive win to have her be in the upcoming X Men movie. Imagine the positive buzz that would have created!

  8. My preference would be a Storm as I picture her in my mind’s eye…dark-skinned and with flowing white dreadlocks instead of that straight hair they always depict her with.

  9. Hollywood is controlled by bigoted white and Jewish men. They have always discriminated against Blacks, especially dark skinned black women. Because light skinned and biracial black woman look closer to the white slave master, they are given more job opportunities in Hollywood. The more black African you look, the less job opportunities that you have.

  10. Storm is supposed to be from Africa. Storm is not racially mixed. She is the daughter of a black African woman and an African-American man. This actress is clearly biracial or racially mixed. Again, Hollywood continues to discriminate against dark skinned black women!

  11. While I was no fan of Halle Berry’s Storm, I do find it a bit unfair and insulting to say her performance was flat and her failure to resonate with fans probably stems from the fact that every single x-men movie save for “First Class” (the worst of all of them imo) centered around Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and his relationship with Jean. Storm was barley of any importance at all. If she doesn’t get to keep her role in the movie neither should Marsden.

I also think as others mentioned colorism plays part here. Why pick this girl to play storm? Storm is an African Queen and was literally worshiped by her people at one point, she should be play by someone with a booming or powerful voice. For years people talked about Angela Basset and I still think she’d be perfect, though for a younger character my choice most definitely would’ve been Naomi Harris.

  12. Very Simple. Whites and Jews are making the X-Men movie. A light skinned racially mixed black woman looks closer to the white European ideal of beauty than a dark skinned African-American woman. As I mentioned before, the more you look like the white slave master, the better you are treated by him.

  13. Colorism primarily exists in Hollywood because the majority of Hollywood studios are owned and operated by white and Jewish males. These white and Jewish males do not like dark skinned black women!

  14. Bad casting yet again! Hollywood will NEVER get Storm right. Won’t be supporting FOX or the X-Men films.

  15. It’s not that they couldn’t find a dark skinned black actress, they just didn’t want to. Hollywood is notorious for whitewashing they’ve been doing it for years. l will NOT support FOX or their adaptions of the X-Men films.

  16. Well said and l agree. When l first heard the news it came to me as no surprise. As a Storm fan l will NOT watch or support these films just as l didn’t tune into the Lifetime biopic of Aaliyah who l loved dearly and still do.

Her music was everything and it’s just sad that Hollywood takes our black icons and smear their images. This is why we need more people of color in those directing chairs so we can create our OWN projects and stop relying on an industry that is ran by predominately white men to tell our stories.

  17. I would have loved to see Nicole Beharie as Storm if not her Tika Sumpter would’ve also been a great choice.

  18. Which is why we need to own more production media outlets and etc so we can create our own and protect our images

  19. Seriously, skin tone is the least of the issues in regards to casting Storm at this point. She has been written horribly and as an unimportant character so far, as Adam pointed out. So first and foremost, she must be written well, then the actor’s portrayal must be on point. Here’s where I have an issue as I was never a fan of Halle’s casting or acting in the films, but Miss Shipp is not an Improvement! House of Anubis and the Aaliyah biopic as a reference do not bode well for her acting ability. There are other more viable options out there such as the aforementioned Nicole Beharie, Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong’o, Gabrielle Union, Keke Palmer, Angell Conwell, the list goes on and on. Better writing and greater acting ability should be prominent here and it clearly is not.

  20. Until we start making our own and hollywood get with the program. This is what we are left with.

  21. okay if skin color isn’t an issue, lets just have charlize theron play storm or maybe arianna grande
