MR. TERRIFIC – Michael Holt – lands on EARTH TWO!
Don’t miss the origin of the Earth Two FLASH – and the first time he uses his powers!
What could be a bigger threat to Earth Two than APOKOLIPS? Jay Garrick is about to find out!
Summary
Mister Terrific winds up on the streets of Manhattan on earth two. There he is quickly dispatched by this worlds smartest man Terry Sloan who has plans he can’t have terrific messing up.
Elsewhere the god mercury, the last of his kind dies after warning Jay Garrick of an impending evil. He grants the boy the speed of a god to aid in the coming battle as he crumbles to dust. He takes off when the military arrives.
Alan Scott returns from Beijing and meets with his boyfriend Samuel. Jay tests out his powers and ends up in Poland where he meets Hawkgirl. On a train Alan proposes to Sam right before the train crashes.
The Good
Diversity– ok let’s talk about the elephant in the room right off the bat. Alan Scott one time golden age Green Lantern and father of Jade and Obsidian is gay. With that out of the way I can say definitively that how it’s handled in the book felt natural. We also get Mr. Terrific and the new Hawkgirl, that’s already more black people than justice League!
Art-Very detailed and stunning art from Nicola Scott everything honestly looks gorgeous. Alex Sinclair and Pete Pantazis dynamic colors complement everything very well.
Cover- From a design standpoint this cover shines like a gem on the shelves. Jay Garrick and his bright yellow, red and blue costume bathed in cold blue light with everything around them a shade of black. Eye catching, visually pleasing!
Earth 2– I love earth 2! Seriously! Issue #1 was excellent; Batman, Wonder woman and Superman all get killed in battle with the forces of Apokalyps. Robin and Supergirl get stranded in the main dc Universe Mr. Terrific who bored me to tears on main earth is now back with his justice society teammates. If they keep up this momentum this may become my very favorite dc comic.
The Bad
Again- So golden age Green Lantern Alan Scott is gay and dc had to go and ruin the introduction by having Alan propose to his beau. I don’t know about anyone else but I find it very convenient that now that Gay marriage is making the rounds on real world news and politics every gay character is comics now wants to get married. I’m hearing rumors of Wiccan and Hulking getting engaged, Northstar got married after barely proposing and creating a whirlwind of buzz for an otherwise crap book and now DC spoils another wise well paced book which I may add turns one of my favorite Green Lanterns gay and by extension removes Jade (love interest of Kyle Rayner) out of existence……..don’t even get me started on what all this means for Kyle’s revised origins and adventures (shakes head)
DC I get the need for diversity and you’re doing a bang up job honestly but tone it down a bit you courting diversity like flies on filth here natural progression is one thing this right here felt forced!
Let’s also note if DC Comics kills of Alan’s new boyfriend so quickly and it’s not handled properly the backlash will be huge!
The Ugly
Still one of the better books not related to Batman or Superman coming from DC Comics 3.5/5
