Green Lantern Corps #48 Review

Summary

On the red Lantern planet Ganthet and Guy Gardner meet with their leader Atroticus. To avert the coming apocalypse they form a secret pact. Ganthet back on OA resigns his guardian status and makes himself the Green Lantern of his sector. Meanwhile the Alpha Lanterns are recruiting once again. John Stewart gets called before the guardians where he is partnered with Alpha Lantern Boodika for a mission.

The Good

Art- One thing you can never say about the green lantern line of books is that they are not visually pleasing. The art, provided by Adrian Syaf hits all the right notes with proportioned characters with distinctive visual flair allowing readers to distinguish between characters even without color. The colors in this issue have a great contrast with the ink and pencil work providing bright and darkness with a very pleasing visual presence.

Story- Hot off Blackest Night (which I was disappointed with) this story establishes what Guy and Ganthet have decided to do about the vision he had while under the influence of a red lantern. The Alpha lantern recruitment drive is understandable as well with forboding clearly in the wings.

Characterization- Guy is a hot head; John is level headed and cool with his military training being highlighted. Boodika the Alpha Lantern as usual was flat but hey it was spot on! Ganthet as always is more concerned with the preservation of the universe. His duty bound attitude has survived all the revisions done by Geof Johns  and is still the core of his being. Good stuff!

The Bad

Alternate cover- The Cg looking alternate cover is hideous.

Lantern Ganthet- It’s a nice tale though Ganthet as a Lantern falls flat for me. The guardians of yesterday were so supremely powerful why would he even need a ring?????

Cast- This book is suppose to be headed by Kyle, Ganthet and John….yet there was no Kyle……That’s just wrong!

The Ugly

2.5/5 good start
