As suggested by more than a few fans I have decided to create a list of my top fifty independent published Black superheroes. Indy/Independent in this case will be used to signify not associated with or connected to the big three: Marvel, DC and Image since all three dominated both the Top 30 lists and our Top 50 list. This excludes heroes who appeared or were published by Image Comics and later left. This list will hopefully prove enlightening especially for those who don’t even realize that there are thousands of black superheroes in circulation and more created each day. This list will also add to our Indy coverage which began way back in 2010 and later evolved into our “Meet The Independents” section. Since I’m limiting the list to fifty heroes however some will simply just not make the cut, I can’t include everyone no matter how cool your character is or how many issues they have sold. My listings are typically controversial and I expect this one to be the same. Brace yourselves for 50 Indy Black Superheroes you should know?!

1st appearance: Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline #1, 1990
Brief Summary
Talked about with fevered hushes and excitement, Brothaman some would argue started it all, the independent comic revolution. Reginald Hudlin and Dwayne McDuffie were huge fans, so much so that they made me a fan. Apart from a minor spat last year between Baba Dawud and Michael Davis of Milestone Media this brand has been free of controversy and squeaky clean. For its influence on such industry giants we can do nothing but give Brothaman the very top spot on our list of top 50 black Indy superheroes. The one thing this brand needs is digitization and some serious mass media coverage for it to reach the next level!

Brief Summary
I’m going to fight the urge to scream like a raving fan girl despite the absolute and divine love I have for the all natural teletechnopath from Valiant entertainment. Strong, Confident and she sure as hell is no damsel in distress. Livewire made her debut in Harbinger as the protégé of Toyo Harada, the big bad as Joss Whedon would say. She subtly betrayed him, was eventually recruited into Unity and the rest as they say is history. In the aftermath of Armour Hunters there is no doubt that is the woman to watch right now from Valiant, forget Dr. Mirage or Geomancer Livewire is the Wonderwoman/Storm of the valiant universe with such loads of potential it’s mind blowing. It also doesn’t hurt that she defies every black chick cliché in mass media right now. She currently appears in Armour wars aftermath, X-O manowar and Unity. All hail Livewire!

1st appearance: Purge #0, 1993
Brief Biography
The best way to describe Purge aka Richard Kincaid is to contrast him against the archetype of all urban vigilantes: the Batman aka Bruce Wayne. In my opinion, Wayne is probably a staunch conservative Republican and his outlook as a vigilante mirrors his political leanings. Kincaid, on the other hand, would probably be a liberal. Wayne is a third generation Robber Baron, his life more in keeping with the Rockefellers and Carnegies, where as Kincaid is more of a Pierre Omiydar (the creator of E-Bay). Kincaid made the bulk of his fortune when most liberal billionaires did, during the Information Technology boom of the 90s.
Kincaid’s vast fortune is comprised not only of patents he’s sold to the U.S. government (as shown in the earlier Purge Comic book series), but also his most commercially publicized enterprise- Internet Television (ITV). When Richard Kincaid isn’t running his corporation, he’s maintaining the status quo in New Salem as a costumed vigilante. Batman and Purge greatly differ in their methods as vigilantes. Batman defends the people of Gotham city from outsiders threatening to infiltrate the city with the goal of terrorizing citizens. Purge’s mission is totally different: he seeks to keep the threats growing under the shiny surface of New Salem from escaping and terrorizing the rest of the world. Batman fights to defend Gotham from evil. Purge fights to contain it.

Brief biography
Shout out was a member of the superhero team, Teenage Kix who were known for their edgy alternative attitudes and appearance which contrasted with the conservative “Young Americans”. Like his friends they were very immoral and unethical reveling in group sex with prostitutes, scamming hospitals etc. This behavior made them targets of “The Boys” who caught them having an orgy after defeating the villains “fearsome foursome”.
Shout Out later came out as gay to the public to garner sympathy and public appeal as they tried to climb the heroic social ladder and maintain face when the team was “blackmailed”. Informed of their blackmailers and not knowing of their reputation they engaged in a street fight and the team was severely injured and defeated. Shout Out had his two arms broken. In the Aftermath they did an interview where they mourned the loss of teammate “Blarney cock”. They disappeared from the public eye soon after.

Wonderful and very enlightening list!
One thing, though, is that Exo’s link for more information and images featuring him leads to a “Oops, page doesn’t exist” screen. Not sure how long it’s been that way, but hopefully you notice and be able to fix it.
Fixed!

One last thing, just so you know: the “Dig Deeper into the character” link is working, but the “47 – Exo” link that proceeds the character still leads to the old, broken page.
