Biography
Born in Brooklyn, Darnell Wade was raised in multiple foster homes throughout his childhood. His only comfort was found in reading about the many superheroes based in New York City. By his mid-20s, while working days at second-hand clothing store, he began moonlighting as the drag queen Shade, inspired by New York superheroes [Uncanny X-Men: Winters End #1, Iceman Vol 4 #4, Iceman Vol 4 #5].
He became best friends with the drag queen, Spillin’ Tea-yana Taylor. They eventually became best friends and Darnel began hosting lip-sync nights at club Astoria [Uncanny X-Men: Winters End #1, Iceman Vol 4 #4, Iceman Vol 4 #5].
Shade’s real ambition was to be the star of a drag queen competition show. Unfortunately, when Spillin’ Tea-yana Taylor gets selected as a drag competition contestant, she snubs Shade on national television ending their friendship and leaving Shade with nothing but an apartment with the electricity turned off and a desire to disappear [Uncanny X-Men: Winters End #1, Iceman Vol 4 #4, Iceman Vol 4 #5].
Darkveil is born
It was at that moment, that Darnel’s mutant powers manifest allowing for control over Darkforce energy to teleport herself and others. Excited by her new powers, Shade agreed to emcee New York’s first Mutant Pride Parade. She also helped the X-Men fend off Mister Sinister’s mutant-Iceman-golems. Vowing to now only use her powers to bring light and joy into the world, Darnell has rebranded his drag/hero persona as Darkveil [Uncanny X-Men: Winters End #1, Iceman Vol 4 #4, Iceman Vol 4 #5].
