Ultimates #2 Review

Ultimates#2 1

Galactus is beyond good and evil. Galactus is a necessary part of the universe. When Galactus hungers — living worlds must die.

The Ultimates have heard it all before, and respectfully… they don’t agree.

But can even the ultimate superteam end the threat of the devourer of worlds for good? And if they do — WHAT will take his place?

The Good

Cover- Evocative of a certain famous renaissance piece depicting the human body but with Galactus at its center, the larger circles surrounding the world eater have our Ultimate teammates: Blue Marvel, Black Panther, Miss America and Spectrum.

Art– Kenneth Rocafort is the artist right now at Marvel comics with his stylized and sci-fi heavy work. It is banging on so many levels. Thankfully Rocafort has the capable Dan Brown on colors. These two and tag teaming the art on this book and the results are simply orgasmic. This is a very detailed and super sexy piece of work. Many pages and scenes would look at home in a frame on a wall. I’m so in love right now! Ultimates#2 2

StoryBlack Panther is teleported using Wakandan Technology to Galactus’ ship where he tries to reason with the world eater. He eventually lashes out and Miss America teleports in Spectrum, Blue Marvel, Captain Marvel to toss Galactus into the Incubator (buy the issue to understand). They accelerate the incubator and Galactus emerges changed.

Characters– Black Panther! Wow! I’m so happy with Al Ewing for continuing and in many ways surpassing what Jonathan Hickman did with the character. In this single issue Ewing touches on the Dora Milaje, the advanced technology in Wakanda, the brilliance of T’challa while also having references to Hickman’s run with the flashback to his disownment by his father, to Priest’s run with the central to the story Kimiyo Card etc. Ta- Nehesi Coates has allot to live up to! This issue was all about the coolness that is the Black Panther.

Spectrum also has a good showing with her powers. Blue Marvel meanwhile opens the issue with the mantra expected of this team after Ewing had Spectrum and Blue Marvel chastise the Illuminati for their secrecy. This is a team operating very publicly.

Galactus also has some good solid character moments with his history being showcased in a modern marvel setting.

Emotions– I’m the biggest Black Panther fan on the net, that’s just a fact, I don’t need to quantify it! This issue got me in the feels man! I love seeing the character executed well and this was simply divine! Technology, spirituality, leadership, sexy ass costume…it makes his separation from Storm all the more painful when a capable writer finally has him in hand…

The Bad

Accessibility– You would need to have a serious history of Galactus and the beginning of the Marvel Universe to get the most out of this issue. Before the Flashback I assumed based on how the opening read that we were going to go back to the beginnings of the character. I knew the history so it was easy for me to digest for a new reader, perhaps not.

Exposition– Like last time this issue is exposition heavy, some readers may not be thrilled about that.

The Ugly

Honestly this was mind blowing! Ultimate is the hottest book from Marvel right now. Al Ewing and Kenneth Rocafort are making magic! This really is the Ultimate book out there! 5/5 Stars

stars- 5 excellent
