Ava Duvernay will NOT be directing The Black Panther Movie!

Ava-DuVernay-Black-Panther

When the internet was a buzz that black female movie director Ava Duvernay was set to direct the “always coming but never actually happened Black Panther Movie”. At first I was excited then realized that like Hudlin’s run on Black Panther the success or failure of the movie would then be used as a reason to make generalizations about either female directors or black directors. It could kick the door down or have the door relocated to another building. As a result of my musings I never did get around to posting the news. Luckily though according to Essence Ava Duvernay will not be directing the Black Panther Movie of 2017-2018 which will star Chadwick Boseman. Here are the details:

“I’m not signing on to direct Black Panther,”

“I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”

“I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs,” said DuVernay. “In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.”

“I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it.”

There you have it. NOT HAPPENING!

  1. I respect her decision and am impressed with her statement
But I am left feeling very uneasy for the project

  2. We think that in some way, shape or form we’re going to get a product worthy of Black perspective, praise and pride from a movie about an African Superhero from an African country more advanced than any other country in the world aaaannnnd the character is created by a white person the movie produced by white people the script is most likely written by a white person from a company that employed only one black person?!? WAIT THERE’S MORE, If I’m not mistaken there was some concern in the the past that it world be a problem with trying to create a Wakanda even after creating Asgard without any publicized issues and I fail to mention actors like lil Romeo mentioned as the lead. All this during a time when innocent black lives are constantly shown being taken all around the country…no the world and we’re having high expectations and getting excited without once again considering the source or motives even after Wesley Snipes wanted the role since the 90s! GTFOH!!! WE STILL SLEEP!

  3. This is sad I was looking forward to her prospective Ava is very talented. You can visit ReelHouse.org and check out The DangerMan Film Pilot Girls Aren’t for Sale, Coming soon the DangerMan Chronicles..

  4. Well. I am disappointed, but I respect her choice. It is important, as an artist, to know where you are and where you want to go as an artist, and to respect the vision that you have. Marvel always makes entertaining movies, so no worries about Black Panther.

  5. Ava…Is a true professional and knew once in,it would be hard to change minds about her vision….She did right..They will call her again..Call me Ava..I have two films…we can talk about…
