The Good
Art-David Marquez turns in the best illustrated book of the Ultimate Marvel line right now. I skipped reviewing Ultimate FF and New Ultimates because their art was just not up to the standard expected of an Ultimate book. Marquez thankfully continues the same high end art we have become accustomed to from the “adventures of Miles Morales”.
Cover– Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #1, it has such a delicious ring to it. The new logo is slick and neatly compact at the top of this opening issue. Meanwhile Miles has this Dark Knight-esque pose with his back to the reader and the city’s sparkling lights ahead of him. I love every f***ing thing about this!
Love– I’m digging the progression of Miles Morales and Kate Bishop’s relationship. I also enjoy how Miles is conflicted about whether or not he should let her into his world. Having Mary Jane to confide in was a nice touch since it connected Miles to the relationship she shared with Peter.
Continuity– I love that Bendis is a continuity whore like myself because that means I get instant payoff and gratification from knowing nothing that I’ve collected from his entire Ultimate Spider-man run has been discarded the way New 52 made my collection obsolete. The connections to death of Peter Parker, Ultimate Comics Spider-man and Cataclysm are all here and if you’ve been here from day one it elevates things o a whole new level.
Diversity– Miles Morales is here to represent both the Black and Latino community while Ganke represents the Asian community.
Characterization– The ramifications of Cataclysm Ultimate Comics Spider-man continue. Miles father has disappeared after their fight and he’s now living with his best friend Ganke. The art truly captured the regret and hurt on Miles face and his anger simmering just below the surface. I expect him to blow up on his principal quite soon if things continue to spiral in his life.
Villain– This issue has the dreaded Green Goblin escaping from custody. Can’t wait for Miles to mix it up with Norman! We also have two Spider-Thieves whose skill alone spells problems for Miles down the road.
The Bad
Last Page- So Peter Parker or his clone shows up at the end of the issue. It was not a shocker nor did it excite me. Instead I rolled my eyes and lamented that we were going down this road of (1). Peter not being dead or (2). Him being a clone or (3). He’s a villain in disguise. Either of those does not fill me with excitement.
The Ugly
This issue could have been better if Bendis had found some other hook to end the issue with. Bringing Peter Parker back on the last page was a kick in the stomach for a number of reasons. Other than that though it was an engaging tale with great visuals, good story, potential and decent diversity. I give Miles Morales the Ultimate Spider-man #1, 4/5 stars!
