Young Avengers (2013) #6 Review

youngavengers6 cover

Ever wonder what the super hero equivalent of a terrible soul-sucking talent-wasting temp job is? You haven’t? Oh go on. Actually, don’t. We’ve done it for you and written a story about it. This one.

Wonder what Tommy (aka Speed) has been up to? Discover herein.

Wonder why mutant David Alleyne (aka Prodigy) hasn’t been even in the background in any one of the eight thousand X-books? Discover that herein too.

Existential horror turns cosmic horror as something emerges from the shadows of the past. It seems the Young Avengers have yet one more thing to worry about.

The Good

Characterization- Seeing Prodigy outside of the X-men line is pretty cool. What’s even better is his use and implementation. Imagine having all the knowledge he does and literally doing a job in a call center. The art while simplistic managed to illustrate the facial expressions and comedic value very well. I honestly have not enjoyed Prodigy this much since the New X-men series which ended in 2008.  In light of Avengers Vs X-men I can see the appeal of having one of the X-men join this squad. Is it just me o was the creepy invisible thing offering Prodigy the vacant Patriot Mantle left behind by Eli Bradley?

Equally as appealing this issue was how well the mundane nature of being a call Center representative is. (I did that $hitty job for almost a year and hated every f****** second of it) I could feel David’s pain as he answered the phone over and over though it did have the hilarious former superhero twist.

Speed was the fast talking super prick he always was and his bad cop to Prodigy’s good was refreshing.

Cover-How I love this cover, let me count the ways! First up the cut and pasted male and female workers are very suited to the Call Center setting since that’s exactly what the job does remove your individuality and make you a mindless worker drone who all recite, think etc in a borg/Phalanx like manner. The only people with individuality are Prodigy and Speed the stars of our story. Sue me I liked it 😉

The Bad

Interior art-Artwork wasn’t very detailed and had moments of inconsistency.

Team-The new Young Avengers team don’t make an appearance this issue

Action- This was a low paced tale with no action at all.

The Ugly

Overall I give this one a 3.5/5 for great characterization and art with copious amounts of potential.

stars- 3.5
