What I thought
Black Manta witnesses the last days of Atlantis and how the black members left before Atlantis sank, returning to mother Africa. Devil Ray is warned that the strain of his body due to Orichalum use is too much but he can’t be dissuaded. He will surpass his former mentor Black Manta. The mysterious woman leaves Themyscria on her Orisha and attacks the villain but is taken out by Gallous. In Atlantis, Devil Ray takes out many Atlantean warriors as a precursor to taking out Black Manta. The art courtesy of Valentine de Landro is growing on me. I really enjoyed it this time! I’m really enjoying the addition of characters such as Gallous, Torrid, and Devil Ray. The back history of the Lost Tribe of Atlantis reminds me of the scattered Inhumans back during marvel’s “Inhumans” phase. This is apparently where the series is going and I’m not mad at it. DC Comics needs all the black heroes it can get as it pushes for diversity in every corner. So many mysteries in this one. Chuck Brown and Valentine de Landro weave a tale of African history steeped in Superhero mythology that is hot as fire! 3/5 stars
