Kumi Berko

Kumi Berko was the son of an Ashanti Empire chief, living a life of wealth and power during his early years. Following a territorial dispute, he was captured, sold into slavery and transported to Jamaica. He joined the Maroons after being freed by the warrior Cudjoe in a plantation raid.

After raising a crew and procuring a ship, Kumi began a career of pirating, attacking various vessels in the Caribbean. Among his crew were Charlie Oliver, a stowaway that habitually stole from Kumi’s plunder, and Adrien, an orphan that had been stashed away on one of the ships Kumi had attacked. Many years his senior, Kumi liked to poke fun at Adrien’s pants and, to Adrien’s great irritation, bestowed upon him the surname “Flood”.

Kumi’s maritime adventures took him as far as Saint-Domingue, where he met Dominique Jean, a spirited young woman and the niece of a voodoo houngan. The two briefly shared a relationship that was cut short by his eventual departure from the island.

In 2013, his genetic memories were used as an Animi Avatar by the entertainment branch of the Templar company Abstergo Industries, to influence the general public via the Animus game console, under the title of the Mercenary.
