Summary
We get a recap of how Dynamo 5 came together after their father Captain Dynamo was killed. His widow in the present leads the team against a villain team called “The Veil”. The team manages to defeat the villain and after they leave Maddie murderers them in cold blood alluding to having secrets of her own.
What I liked
It was good that Jay Faerber and Mahmud A. Asrar managed to get the origin of the five heroes, their main support staff and the historical context that brought them all together in the very first issue. In this day and age of writing a comic like a soap opera which draws things out for months, this is a welcome change. I also would like to compliment the art by Mahmud A. Asrar, it has this great circa 1996 Joe Maduiera meets Chris Bachalo anime flair that is very visually pleasing. That twist ending also literally pulled me deeper into the mythology of this series and guarantees I’ll be around for at least the next year to see how this plays out. Black Hero Slingshot makes her glorious debut!
Overall
There’s an emotional resonance in this first issue that most series can’t muster even twelve issue in. Add that to great art, cool characters and a building mystery and you have a very good comic book! 4/5
