Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #2 Review

MILES MORALES ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #2 cover

PART TWO OF THE BIGGEST SPIDER-MAN STORY OF THE YEAR

“REVIVAL”

After the mind-blowing reveal at the end of the first issue, miles life will NEVER be the same again.

With SHIELD gone, the biggest villain in SPIDER-MAN history is out and nothing can stop him.

Miles has made a huge choice about the woman he loves. Will he live to regret it?

The Good

Story– At the site of the now closed Osborn industries Norman Osborn the Green Goblin arrives. He enters a secret lab filled with money and equipment. Elsewhere Miles is freaking out that Peter Parker is standing before him. Peter demands Miles hang up the mantle and hand over the web shooters. When Peter grabs his arm Miles instinctively hits him with a venom blast. Peter knocks out Miles and commandeers the web shooters while he’s unconscious.  When he wakes up he runs to Ganke’s house. The spider-like villains of last issue attack a guard at Stark’s. Miles is ready to tell his girlfriend his secret as he thinks she’s now in danger.

Cover– This month we have Miles Morales our titular hero sitting on a bed holding his costume in hand looking at the reader in deep thought. Behind him is a poster of Peter Parker in his spider-man garb. It has a decidedly dark and somber tone to it reflecting the turn his life is about to take yet again.

Chameleon– It would be cool no super cool if Peter Parker and the two spider-like ninjas kicking so much ass turned out to be the “Chameleon twins” introduced way back in Ultimate Comics Spider man #11! Make it so Bendis, NO CLONES PLEASE!

Art– David Marquez continues to dazzle with the visuals on this book.  Emotions, action and marriage to the script are all just top-notch.

Characterization– How do I love Miles Morales? I can’t count the ways. His freak out over the return of Peter Parker was excellently executed both in terms of art and script. The entire exchange between Peter and Miles was also well done. I also enjoyed the interaction between him and Ganke was humorous and natural. Miles fear of what could potentially happen to his girlfriend is also well executed and long time fans can understand why he would feel the need to “confess” with what happened to Mary Jane and the death of and resurrection of Gwen Stacey. Let’s also not forget his uncle was killed in battle, his mother Rio Morales died in his arms and his father Jefferson Davis-Morales abandoned him upon realizing he was Spider-man (See . This is a legitimate Spider-man related fear because, no pun intended $hit gets real when villains attack in his world.

Humor– Ganke is kind of like Bulk and Skull in the original power rangers, here for comedy relief though sometimes more. This issue he’s mostly humor and nothing is wrong with that, it works!

The Bad

Clones-I’m old enough that I lived through the Maximum clonage saga of the 90’s and the Ultimate rendition which was so much better than the story which inspired it. Having said that I cringe every single time the word clone is used in a sentence or story relating to Spider-man. It may turn out good but I am so suck to death of Spider-man and clones as I am about the X-men and the Phoenix. Talk about beating a dead freaking horse!

The Ugly

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #2 is diversity done right! It is simply a beautifully scripted, wonderfully illustrated dose of comic book heaven that you, your moma and your uncle should be reading. We give Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-man #2 –4/5 stars

stars- 4 very good

  1. I’m just mad Peter washed him so easily. I mean, no spider sense kick in in? Dude got whooped.

  2. I agree mathew! But chances are we will get a real knock down drag out battle as things progress! 🙂

Miles is gonna Venom blast his punk a$$!

  3. Where to start Evelyn? Have you read trades or single issues? It’s easier to help if I know where you are 🙂

You can also follow this link to every issue we have reviewed/previewed etc on Miles. I usually do a handy summary of events so it should be able to bring you up to speed! http://worldofblackheroes.com/tag/miles-morales-the-ultimate-spiderman/

You can also check out book store if you want to buy a TPB on Miles http://astore.amazon.com/worldofblackh-20

    Cheers~

  4. I guess I’m reading trades…? I get them at the library. At the end of the last one I read, Miles’ uncle wanted them to team up to defeat this big tattooed guy who was from outside of the U.S. (Maybe Mexico) and Miles reluctantly agreed.

I’ll check your links. Thanks for your help.
