So….remember how excited everyone’s been about the upcoming “almost all black” mighty avengers title (Which features Luke CageFalcon, Blue MarvelSpectrum, Power Man and White Tiger? Well marvel has decided to release this alternate cover to coincide with the launch. An almost black team….with a dancing banana dressed Deadpool? I’m sure there’s a racist remark or two that one can draw from blacks and bananas but I’ll leave that up to you.

Was this intentional?

or

is marvels lack of a black editor or writer to blame for this oversight?

This is just part of the Deadpool “meme” variants. And “It must be racist or an oversight”? Racist to who? Bananas?

Black people were referred to as monkeys as a derogatory term. I kinda think it’s that peanut butter jelly time thing. But that’s one hell of a time to bring that up. LOL

Really?! Of all the thing to put on alternative cover. this doesn’t seem like a coincidence.

Doctor Deadpool, let me guess, you’ve never heard a white person call a black person an ape or monkey right? Why don’t you stop playing and be honest.

You are absolutely right…. Folks are just reaching. Soon as I saw the cover I started laughing because I got the reference.

The fact that Family guy was making a racist joke (which they do all the time and get away with because we all need to laugh at ourselves as a humanrace) and Marvel took it and put it on an the black AVENGERS cover tells me they don’t have any black people in those meetings saying, “um Tom, this isn’t a good idea”. Family guy was original edgy and goofy funny, Deadpool doing it in this context is pathetic please let the guy responsible know how you feel @TomBrevoort

It has racist overtones but I’m sure that they will say that they were just being “funny” and that people are being over sensitive. Even if it were overtly racist towards a group or groups of people, nowadays people don’t really care about that sort of thing. If you can kill a Black for carrying Arizona tea and a bag of Skittles, who cares about steretypes and comical racism???.

I don’t get it. If there’s a racist undertone I have no idea what it is.
Maybe it’s not racist but just goofy?

I think calling this racist is a bit of a stretch. I doubt someone at marvel is sitting in a corner laughing maniacally because he got away with this cover. It’s more probable that they were thinking, “Hey, do you know what’s funny? Banana suits and maracas. You know, because of Peanut Butter Jelly time. People will love this!”

If you look for racism everywhere you will find it. And the fact of the matter putting black people or whomever down is not high on most people’s priority lists.

Well, first I think it’s a stupid cover but I think it’s more due to a lack of people of color (or at least people who think these things through) as editors more than an intentional statement.

eh? that’s almost reaching because even though he’s wearing a banana suit it’s “peanut butter jelly time”.

I would love to be naive and say it’s a poorly executed joke and nothing more. But sadly… I think it’s likely some racist’s joke that slipped by some naive (and ignorant) people.

I don’t think it was intentional but just really poor planning. I agree haveing more black editors would have saved them from stupid stuff like this.

I am more tired of Deadpool showing up everywhere. He is the standard boring Marvel antihero cut out.

Definitely dumb on the part of the publisher but he’s suppose to be Brian from Family Guy. The dog does wears the suit and does a little dance. I don’t get how they’re related though.

The cover is stupid. I also understand the possible racist overtones because of the banana and centuries of being called monkeys by racist ignorant individuals. In this instance I’m going to give the editor the benefit of the doubt and go with the “Family Guy” reference and hope I’m not wrong.

It really is an ugly cover. Do I think it’s racist? I don’t know. But I don’t like that the main man Luke Cage is completely covered up. One could that they believe that the H.N.I.C. in this story is of little importance. Bendis would not have allowed that.

I personally don’t think Bendis like’s Cage that much. I’ve read the whole New Avengers run and he didn’t do one thing to make Luke stand out. And that whole can I borrow a dollar thing. Really?

I prefer Luke Cage when he was a bad ass that didn’t take any shit. Seems like they have to soften up everybody these days.

It’s RACIEST,and given that they got it from family guy with the dog sounding like the rapper from 69 boys and they put it on the first edition cover of a all ethnic team. We need to make our own HEROS for us by us and about us.

This has got to be a fake photoshop. I refuse to believe the Marvel could be so insensitive. This is deliberate racism aimed towards blacks. If you don’t understand that, then you might be part of the problem. When I saw this, I thought about Jackie Robinson and how racist fans would call him a monkey and throw bananas at him on the field. But being the amazing man he was, he showed patience with these idiots, bit his tongue and continued to do his job. He is a better man than me…let me tell you!

And by the way, what would be the point of having Deadpool completely cover Luke Cage? That makes no sense at all.

      1. It’s a variant. A meme variant, which is probably why my brain can’t take it seriously on any level.

      2. He just so happens to be in the center of cover- where they decided to put Peanutbutterjellypool. It’s going by the logic that the normal cover is underneath. Oddly, they break this pattern randomly, like with the Infinity #1 Deadpool variant.

      3. He is not COMPLETELY covered. You can see his arms and a leg.

Also, did anyone read Deadpool #13? I’m surprised that slipped under the griever radar. He wears an afro glued to his mask for pretty much the whole issue. Luke Cage tosses him out a window. It was awesome.

Marvel needs to get its shit together because this is not ok. I’m probably being overly optimistic but I really hope that this wasn’t intentional.

I don’t think it’s intentional. Marvel is just a bunch of idiots. They’re like the white grandmother who compliments the black waiter but calls him colored. You want to get mad, but know it comes from ignorance and her heart was in the right place. But Marvel desperately needs more minorities on staff
